Environment Board reviews environmental equity investigation draft

November 22, 2025

Evanston’s Environment Board on Thursday largely supported recommendations outlined in a draft of the environmental equity investigation conducted by MKSK, a Chicago-based planning and architecture firm.

The city contracted MKSK back in September 2024 to investigate how racially discriminatory policies have impacted pollution, public health, access to nature, walkability and public transportation. The project came out of a resolution adopted by City Council in September 2020 pledging “active consideration of environmental justice and meaningful public participation in City policies, practices, procedures, and other decision-making.”

During the Environment Board’s Nov. 20 meeting at the Evanston Public Library’s main branch, Brett Weidl, one of MKSK’s principals, presented a current draft of the firm’s recommendations for review. She said a final draft is expected to be released early next year.
