BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – On June 5, the City of Bowling Green Environmental Compliance Division held a meeting to discuss results from the Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP) and hear feedback from the community on the decisions that were chosen.
The CCAP was created with the intent to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the city and the atmosphere.
Environmental Manager Matt Powell said that there are various sectors that the city is focused on, such as transportation, energy generation, and waste management. These sectors then have measures associated with them.
For transportation, one measure is to help adjust heavily traveled areas.
“We’ve selected those measures and we’ve done some evaluation on the impact that those measures can have for our community across the metropolitan statistical area,” Powell said. “The whole four-county region. So this was an opportunity for the public to come in and be briefed about which measures made the final cut.”
The goal is to find out who and what is creating these emissions to take action.
“It establishes which of our industries across the community emit those kinds of gases and what are the potential changes that the metropolitan statistical area could make that would have an impact on that business as usual model,” he explained.
Analyzing industries and transportation in the city that cause high gas emissions can help the city work on eliminating the issue, which leads to climate change.
“What could we do as a local government or as a community? What changes could we implement that would cause those emissions to decrease over time?” Powell said.
The city is hopeful that implementing these new changes can make a difference and decrease greenhouse gases.
