Senior Ethan Elder is the 2026 recipient of the David Smith Leadership Award, a recognition that celebrates students who exemplify service, initiative, and commitment within the College of Natural Resources and Environment.

Elder, a senior forestry major, leads by example, serving as a CNRE ambassador, the president of the Virginia Tech chapter of the Society of American Foresters, and working with faculty as a teaching assistant, supporting student learning in soils, forest fiber supply, and forest boundaries and roads.

Elder said the award reflects the approach he brings to his work.

“My personal motto is to be involved and do the best I can in everything and help folks out,” he said. “I think that’s what this award speaks to, and the work that I’ve done as a student over my time in the college.”

Faculty and staff who have worked closely with Elder say the recognition is well deserved.

“Ethan is one of those rare students who just checks every single box for a supervisor to be proud of,” John Gray Williams said. “He is remarkably consistent, impeccable with his word, dedicated and dependable, while also being friendly, joyful, and playful. He steps up every single time. Boy, am I going to miss him.”

Jen Gagnon first met Elder when he joined the Society of American Foresters as a freshman and has watched him grow as a mentor and leader.

“Ethan’s leadership has resulted in the largest chapter we have had in years 40-plus members, making it an engaged and active group,” she said. “I’m very proud of his success and know he will go on to do great things for the forestry profession.”
