The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is entering a new phase as co-founder Vitalik Buterin outlined a structural and philosophical shift prioritizing resilience over expansion.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has shared his perspective on the Ethereum Foundation’s evolving strategic direction in a detailed post on X, signaling a deliberate shift away from broad organizational scope toward a tighter focus on CROPS — censorship-resistance, openness, privacy, and security. 

The update signals a broader evolution in EF’s mandate, with Buterin stressing that the foundation is no longer positioned as the primary “center of Ethereum,” but rather “one node among many” within the ecosystem.

Buterin outlined that the Ethereum Foundation is shifting toward a more constrained operational model, prioritizing “longevity over breadth.” This includes reducing ETH expenditures and selling less ETH going forward.

The change also means the EF will support fewer initiatives directly, allowing more teams and projects to operate independently outside its structure.

Buterin acknowledged that this transition may lead some respected researchers and contributors to move beyond the Foundation’s boundaries, framing it as a necessary step for ecosystem maturity.

At the same time, the Ethereum Foundation is expected to become smaller, more specialized institution focused on ensuring Ethereum remains censorship-resistant, secure, and architecturally distinct from competing systems.

A significant portion of the post centers on Ethereum’s evolving ideological direction, which concentrates on what Buterin called “CROPS” priorities—censorship resistance, openness, privacy, and security. 

These include initiatives such as formal verification for bug-free protocol design, improvements to chain availability under extreme network conditions, and efforts to reduce reliance on intermediaries in transaction propagation and wallet infrastructure. 

Buterin emphasized that Ethereum should not compete on raw performance metrics like TPS or latency alone, but instead focus on structural resilience and cryptographic robustness, aiming to be “deeply impressive” in areas such as security, censorship resistance, and architectural resilience.

Security, Consensus, and Intermediary Reduction
Buterin’s post also outlines three main technical priorities.

First, making Ethereum systems more reliable by using advanced tools like formal verification and AI to reduce bugs and security risks.

Second, improving how the network reaches agreement, combining two different security models to keep Ethereum safe even during major network stress, without relying on emergency fixes or social intervention.

Third, reducing dependence on middlemen in transactions by improving direct access to the network and cutting reliance on centralized service providers that can become points of censorship or failure.

The Ethereum Foundation’s strategic repositioning will directly shape which core infrastructure gets funded and prioritized, with ripple effects for developers, protocols, and investors building on or holding ETH. 

A leaner, more values-driven EF could sharpen Ethereum’s differentiation from competing L1s or create gaps that competitors and alternative funding bodies move to fill.
