Evanston’s renewable energy credits: A market-based climate tool

April 27, 2025

Since 2014, 100% of energy supplied to Evanston residents is considered renewable due to the purchase of renewable energy credits. Although Evanston itself is not run on clean energy sources like solar or wind, the city purchases credits that support renewable energy production in other Midwestern states.

“A renewable energy credit is a legal claim to renewable energy,” Evanston Sustainability Coordinator Cara Pratt explained to the RoundTable. “It is not physical electrons that power any building.”

The energy to your home still comes from your energy provider derived from their broad grid. This might include a combination of fossil fuels, nuclear energy and all kinds of renewables.
