Facebook users targeted by phishing scam posing as Meta
March 4, 2025
LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Facebook users are being warned about a new phishing scam where messages claiming to be from Meta, Facebook’s parent company, falsely accuse users of violating terms or intellectual property rights.
The messages threaten that if users do not respond by clicking on a provided link, their Facebook page will be scheduled for deletion.
Laura Nowlan, a small business owner, fell victim to the scam. “As soon as she went to the link, her Facebook page was seized by a hacker who also took control of her Instagram account,” she said.
Nowlan described her experience trying to resolve the issue.
“So we go ahead and do a Google find meta number, right? So we call the meta line, and it’s another hacker on the other side, because they say, ‘Hey, can I get access? We’re going to what we’re going to do. Don’t worry, we’re going to be able to help you. Go ahead and give us access. We’re going to share. We want you to share. Basically, you know, they do screen sharing.’ And my daughter’s like, hold on a second. And I’m like, ‘Hey. I go, What is your meta operator number?’ And they hung up on me,” she said.
