Family connections and nurturing environment earn University Presbyterian top Best of Baton Rouge awards
May 9, 2026
University Presbyterian Day School has earned top local recognitions, winning the Gold awards for best preschool and best child care in the 2026 edition of the Best of Baton Rouge. School leaders and parents said the awards are well-earned, reflecting a shared commitment to nurturing young children at every stage of their development.
“It’s a big deal to place your child in the care of others, and it has meant a lot to me to see how the teachers really get to know my children,” said Margaret Finch, who has had both of young children at University Presbyterian in the past few years. “They cultivate an amazing environment and are truly excited to share in the child’s milestones and accomplishments.”
That individualized approach is rooted in a mission that has guided the school for decades. Originally established in 1961, the University Presbyterian program began as a half-day preschool at a time when kindergarten options were limited. Over the years, it has evolved to meet the changing needs of families, adding programs and expanding services.
Today, University Presbyterian offers an infant program for those ages three to 12 months, a toddler program for one- and two-year-olds and a preschool program for kids who are three and four. The curriculum is tailored to each age level and encompasses sensory exploration, motor skill development, early language skills, social interaction, play-based learning, creativity and problem-solving.
“Our classrooms are structured, our staff is accountable and our environment stays positive and nurturing,” said Linda Harrell, a longtime University Presbyterian teacher. “One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing growth – watching a child who may have struggled at first begin to thrive, communicate and gain confidence.”
Harrell said that while no two days are alike at University Presbyterian, each day does include structured activities like center time, naps, snacks and meals, along with opportunities for play and creativity. Seasonal projects and celebrations are also part of the experience. This spring, for example, students have been preparing for their art show, where each class will present works created throughout the year.
“We’re not just a daycare. We’re a foundation for early development,” said Director Kenisha Brumfield. “From infants to preschoolers, we focus on building strong relationships, encouraging learning through play and supporting each child’s individual needs. Our teachers show up every day with patience, passion and genuine love for the children. That’s something you can’t teach – it comes from the heart.”
University Presbyterian also makes it a priority to build strong relationships with families. Teachers and staff work closely with parents, sharing frequent updates and photos to ensure they feel connected and confident in their child’s care.
“I never have to wonder what my child is doing that day or what kind of progress they are making,” Finch said. “I think that comes from the program taking place in a smaller environment. Each child matters on an individual level.”
Harrell said she and other teachers at the school all share the same desire to nurture and care for each child. That has led to long-term relationships with families. In fact, it isn’t unusual for University Presbyterian teachers to attend their students’ birthday parties or sporting events as a show of support.
“I don’t just focus on teaching academics. I focus on the whole child, including their emotional, social and developmental growth,” Harrell said.
Brumfield said that being named the Best of Baton Rouge in two categories this year is a moment of pride for the entire staff. But, they have no plans to rest on their laurels. Interested parents can call or email to arrange a campus tour, meet teachers and discuss fees, tuition and hours.
“To be recognized for something we’re so passionate about is truly a blessing,” Brumfield said. “We do this work because we care. Every hug, every milestone, every smile – it all matters.”
