Food distributor hit with major cyberattack could have an impact on your groceries

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – One of the country’s largest health food wholesalers had to shut down its systems after a major cyberattack and it could have an impact on your groceries in eastern Iowa.

United Natural Foods has taken some of its systems offline while it investigates the cyberattack. It said it first learned of the incident last Thursday.

New Pioneer Food Co-op became aware of the cyberattack this past weekend. UNFI notified them they would be unable to send trucks out or accept orders.

Jenifer Angerer, New Pioneer’s Marketing Project Coordinator, says customers should be prepared for changes.

“There will be some grocery gaps so there may be things missing from the shelves. You’ll also see some different products on the shelves because we’ll try to get items in, but they may not be the brand you’re used to seeing on our shelves.”

Angerer says they plan to pivot their orders to smaller distributors and local growers to fill in the gaps.
