Four cannabis entrepreneurs await Jenkins city ordinance
June 16, 2025
JENKINS — When the Jenkins City Council met for the Monday, June 9, regular meeting, they were in dire need of an answer regarding the city’s cannabis licensing ordinance.
This is because four potential license applicants have shown interest in opening in Jenkins. Of those, two were confirmed to have been selected in the state’s license lottery.
One such business has a tentative agreement for property next to Northland Off Sale Liquors in the strip mall on Highway 371 on the north end of town.
During the meeting, the council reviewed an ordinance proposal.
The proposal included four licenses due to the indication of four interested parties. Mayor Andrew Rudlang inquired about this, because past discussion was for two licenses.
Council member Roman Siltman said the planning commission proposed four to avoid having to do a lottery or similar for the four interested parties. Furthermore, just because there are four does not mean that four will be able to survive.
“It does seem pretty similar to the liquor license, which seems reasonable to me,” Rudlang said.
The draft resolution does include a buffer preventing cannabis businesses from operating on property adjoining an existing school or licensed day care. The draft also limits the hours of operation and describes requirements for signage.
The council agreed to hold a public hearing during the Monday, July 7, regular planning meeting with approval to follow Monday, July 14, at the regular council meeting.
In other business Monday, the council:
- Approved a conditional use permit for TW Miller Construction, allowing a building on their property to be used for storage.
- Agreed to try to relocate the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway pavilion featuring Jenkins history to the city’s Veterans Park.
- Approved a complaint policy dictating methods for submitting complaints to the city.
- Approved a policy describing how bids and quotes are to be requested for expenses over $10,000.
