Frankfort’s first medical cannabis dispensary opens
January 30, 2026
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Frankfort, Kentucky’s first medicinal cannabis dispensary opened its doors Friday morning. NuEra Cannabis was supposed to open days ago but was postponed due to the winter storm.
“It’s going to create fifteen jobs, and all product is grown in the state of Kentucky. They’re grown at the cultivation licenses that were issued, then processed at the licenses. There’s going to be a variety of assortments, from flower, edibles, vapes,” said Divina Capellupo of NuEra.
Medicinal cannabis company owners entered a state lottery and won a business license in December 2024.
Since then, shops like NuEra have been waiting on processors and cultivators to create enough products.
Since Kentucky’s medical cannabis law went into effect Jan. 1, 2025, more than 23,000 medical cards have been issued to patients managing conditions like cancer and PTSD.
“We rely on practitioners to write these certifications, so they’re going to their doctors, to their health care advice, on whether or not this is going to be helpful for them,” said Cannon Armstrong with the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis.
Besides NuEra in Frankfort, Kentucky, Alternative Care is opening its dispensary on Bardstown Road in the Highlands Saturday. It’s the first business of its kind in Jefferson County.
