From Stocks to ETFs and Bitcoin: How the Swiss are Investing

June 30, 2025

Shares and Exchange Traded Funds are the most popular investment products in Switzerland. A new study also shows Crypto Currencies are gaining ground.

On Monday, Swiss digital wealth manager True Wealth published its ETF Study 2025. For the study, market research institute GfK surveyed more than 2,200 statistically representative individuals between the ages of 16 and 74.

The results highlight that exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are widely popular. Some 29.9 percent of respondents said they currently invest in ETFs — making them the second most used investment product among Swiss private investors after shares (50.9 percent).

Gender and Regional Gaps

The study reveals a persistent gender gap in investing: Among men, 27 percent do not invest at all, compared to 43 percent of women.

The most common reasons for not investing are a lack of financial resources (men: 53 percent; women: 57 percent), lack of knowledge (31 percent and 36 percent, respectively), and risk considerations (30 percent and 18 percent).

Diversification and Costs

While 37 percent of male investors invest in ETFs, only 21 percent of women do so. Women are also less likely to invest in stocks (59 percent among men versus 40 percent among women) and crypto assets (25 percent versus 12 percent among women).

When choosing ETF investments, Swiss investors place the greatest importance on broad diversification (65.9 percent), low costs (58.9 percent), easy access (47.1 percent), and recommendations from third parties (22.2 percent).

Crypto Becoming Mainstream

Some 48.5 percent of those already owning ETFs plan to increase their ETF investments over the next 12 months, while only 5.7 percent plan to reduce them.

Another interesting finding: 19 percent of Swiss investors — and even 27 percent among those aged 30 to 49 — currently hold cryptocurrencies. With nearly one in five investors already holding digital assets, Switzerland shows a strikingly high level of crypto adoption.
