Galp Acquires 351 MW Spanish Wind Portfolio to Boost Renewables

According to Power Technology, Galp has agreed to purchase a portfolio of operational onshore wind assets in Spain from Helia Funds. The assets have a combined capacity of 351 megawatts and are located across 17 sites in the country, operating under merchant market conditions and producing an estimated 750 gigawatt-hours each year.

The transaction carries an equity value of approximately 320 million euros and is anticipated to be finalized by the second quarter of 2026. Upon completion, the acquisition will increase Galp’s wind generation in Spain and expand its total installed renewable capacity to 2 gigawatts, with wind power expected to account for about one-quarter of that generation.

The company stated that integrating the Spanish wind portfolio will enhance the diversity of its technologies and support its strategy in the Iberian power market. Galp maintains that the purchase aligns with its capital expenditure guidance for 2025 and 2026, which averages at or below 800 million euros annually. Company representatives emphasized the acquisition will support renewable energy growth plans and further diversify generation assets.

In a related development, the European Investment Bank approved a 430 million euro loan last February to support two renewable energy projects at Galp’s Sines Refinery in Portugal. The financing will help fund a biofuels unit and a renewable hydrogen facility, both part of plans to decarbonize heavy-duty road transport and aviation.

The biofuels plant, developed with Mitsui of Japan, represents a total investment of 400 million euros, with the bank contributing 250 million euros. The unit will process vegetable oils and residual fats to produce sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. Galp expects the unit to become operational in 2026 with an annual output of up to 270,000 tonnes of renewable fuels.
