GE Aerospace investing $73 million in 2 Alabama cities

March 12, 2025

Two Alabama cities will benefit from a billion-dollar national push to invest in American manufacturing by GE Aerospace.

The company announced Wednesday it will pump about $73 million into the state as part of a larger national commitment which will hire more than 5,000 workers in the U.S. this year.

According to the company, GE Aerospace will invest $51 million in Auburn, and $22 million in Huntsville.

The company’s investments will help fund parts production to give engines more range, power, and efficiency. This includes additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, and ceramic matrix composites, or CMCs.

CMCs are one-third the weight of traditional materials but can operate in temperatures at up to 500 degrees higher, giving greater power and durability for engines.

For Auburn, the company plans to expand the existing facility, add 3D printers, upgrades to existing equipment there and tooling to increase capacity.

For Huntsville, the money will purchase additional machines to produce materials that are the building blocks for ceramic matrix composite engine parts.

Both sites produce components used in both narrowbody and widebody aircraft engines, as well as fighter jet, helicopter and marine military engines.

“Investing in manufacturing and innovation is more critical than ever for the future of our industry and the communities where we operate,” CEO H. Lawrence Culp Jr. said in a statement.“We are committed to helping our customers modernize and expand their fleets while scaling technologies that will truly define the future of flight. Together, this will keep the United States at the forefront of aerospace leadership.”

In all, GE Aerospace is planning investments in 16 states, including Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Indiana and Kentucky. At least $200 million will go into engine production for the new T901 Black Hawk and Apache helicopters.

According to the company, engines made by GE Aerospace and its joint venture partners power three out of every four commercial flights around the world and two of three U.S. military combat and helicopter aircraft.
