Georgia lawmakers pass medical cannabis expansion, tighten THC restrictions in local shops
March 10, 2025
ATLANTA, Ga. (WGXA) — Lawmakers passed 3 cannabis bills on crossover day last week.
Senate Bill 33 and Senate Bill 254 both aim to restrict the THC products currently available at smoke shops and gas stations.
However, SB 254 would specifically ban THC drinks.
Senator Randy Robertson referenced the state of California recently passing a similar bill due to the dangers of certain THC products.
“California has been dancing in the arena of marijuana for years and years and they realized that they don’t have control over it. We need to pump the brakes, slow down, and make sure we’re doing the best thing for our state”, said Robertson.
Senator Kay Kirkpatrick is the main sponsor of SB 33. She says some of the products come from foreign countries and contain ingredients that have not been tested properly.
“The products may be contaminated with industrial solvents, heavy metals, and other contaminants. This is a health risk and the FDA has written numerous warning letters due to adverse events”, said Kirkpatrick.
Senate bill 220 would modify and expand Georgians’ access to medical marijuana.
Senator Matt Brass says the bill would add lupus and cancer to the approved medical conditions for cannabis.
“Some of them need this medicine. Some of these doctors need this tool to treat their patients”, said Brass.
The bill would also take the legal limit of medical cannabis from 5% to 50%.
Senator Ed Setzler voted against the bill, stating that it is an excuse for people to get high.
“It’s indefensible medically to do this unless the purpose of this bill is to get people stoned and being stoned is the medical value we’re trying to glean for this bill…It is indefensible!” said Setzler.
The bills now head to the House of Representatives.
