Germany and Africa team up to forget about oil — 140,000 tons to and 1 GW each year

November 30, 2025

Germany and Africa are set to team up and revolutionize the global energy sector in the coming years. For far too long, the global energy market has been dominated by the conventional oil and gas sector, leading to substantial levels of climate change that have subsequently devastated the environment. However, the renewable energy market has been growing at an astonishing rate over the past few years, and now Germany and Africa have teamed up to forget about oil altogether, well, at least for the time being.

The renewable energy sector has grown well beyond previous expectations

The aforementioned proclivity for oil and gas energy production has led the world down a dark path of self-destruction, leading to the climate devastation that has ravaged some parts of the world. Melting polar ice caps, the wildfires that litter the Californian state, and the recent floods that have devastated certain regions in the US can all be attributed to climate change.

We all share a responsibility in addressing climate change, and now, Germany and Africa are set to team up to develop a new renewable energy project in a region of Africa that could be considered the perfect environment anywhere in the world for renewable energy production. So hold on to your hats, because the energy sector is changing, for the better, we might add.

Mauritania and Möhring Energie Holding GmbH sign new deal for green hydrogen and ammonia

The government of the West African nation of Mauritania has signed a new framework with the German energy major Möhring Energie Holding GmbH to develop a large-scale industrial plant for the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia. Marking a milestone achievement for the renewable energy sector, not just in Africa, but for the rest of the world as well.

Mauritania’s hydrogen program is set to grow to astonishing levels

The framework agreement was signed in the African nation’s capital in the presence of government leaders and officials from the German energy company. The plan calls for a facility to be built that could produce up to 140,000 tons of green hydrogen and 400,000 tons of green ammonia every year, with production on-site slated for 2029.

The NAYRAH project, as it has become known, is a planned industrial cluster in southern Mauritania, where perfect wind and solar conditions coincide. Limitless power has been a pipedream for most of us, but by developing the framework for the new green hydrogen and ammonia project in Africa, the world can rest a little bit easier knowing that progress is being made to develop new and pioneering forms of energy generation.

“We are proud to be the first German company to enter into a strategic partnership with Mauritania to develop a large-scale PtX project. Mauritania has excellent conditions for generating wind and solar power – the basis for globally competitive green molecules. We would particularly like to thank the Mauritanian Ministry of Energy for their professional and solution-oriented cooperation.” – Sascha Möhring, CTO and founder of Möhring Energie Group

Africa’s proclivity for renewable energy has been on full display recently

The new framework signed by the German energy company and the Mauritanian government is just the latest in a long line of African nations that are developing new and astonishing renewable power projects. Egypt has also been developing a new solar project that could reshape regional energy supply for many years to come. The dream of reaching a point where the world can confidently phase out coal and oil production is a lot closer than some may think, thanks to projects such as the one in Mauritania paving the way towards a world powered by renewable energy.
