It’s another chilly weekend in the Greater Toronto Area as Environment Canada issued a yellow cold warning for “very cold wind chills.”

The federal weather agency warned of wind chills of -30 to -35 from Saturday evening into Sunday morning. The frigid temperatures are expected to return Sunday night and into Monday morning.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” said Environment Canada’s alert.

Saturday evening will be a low of -21 C with a wind chill of -28 overnight.

Sunday will be sunny with a high of -12 C that will feel like -28 C in the morning and -19 C in the afternoon.

Environment Canada climatologist David Phillips said the cold snap Ontario has been experiencing is out of the ordinary.

“It’s very, very rare you get 4 months in a row with the same kind of cold conditions,” he told CBC Toronto Saturday.

And a break from the bitter cold is still some time away, Phillips added.

“My sense is this is a long-term thing and there’s no relief in sight,” he said. “Spring is not going to rush to spring this year. We’re going to ease into it in a very, very slow way.”

The highest temperature in the next couple of weeks will likely be 2 or 3 C, Phillips said.

“There is a little bit of warming on the horizon, but then a return of the cold will just bring us to our knees,” he said. “We’re going to end February on a cold note.”

In its warning, Environment Canada notes the risk of frostbite throughout the weekend.

It said people should watch out for cold-related symptoms, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle weakness, or any change of colour in fingers and toes.

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” the weather agency said, adding young kids, seniors, people with chronic illnesses, and those without proper shelter should exercise extra caution.
