Consumers should not to eat Haribo cola sweets from kilo bags because a number of people have reported feeling dizzy after eating them, the Dutch food safety board NVWA said on Thursday.

The authorities are carrying out research into the cause of the dizziness, in close cooperation with Haribo, the agency said in a short statement.

According to news agency ANP and tv news show Hart van Nederland, traces of cannabis have been found in the sweets. It is also unclear how many people were taken ill but the NVWA said at least three bags of sweets are involved.

The police are currently investigating how the cannabis came to be in the packets, ANP said.

Haribo has asked anyone with kilo bags of Happy Cola F!ZZ with a use-by date of January 2026 and product code L341-4002307906 to return them to the company for a refund.

Other sized bags are not affected.

As yet, it is not clear whether the scare involves genuine Haribo bags or fakes. Cannabis “edibles”, often disguised as legitimate sweets, are a popular online buy and stories about children becoming ill after eating them are common.

In 2023, six children were taken ill while playing outside in The Hague after eating sweets containing THC, one of the active ingredients in cannabis. There is a type of THC fruit gum available which is very similar to the popular Haribo gummy bears.

Dutch News has contacted both Haribo and the NVWA for comment.
