Head of ICE wants Amazon-style deportations: ‘We need to get better at treating this like

The acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the agency needs to revamp its logistics to be more like Amazon or FedEx when it comes to transporting human beings. According to Bloomberg, Todd Lyons made the comments during a border security conference in Phoenix this week.
“We need to get better at treating this like a business, where this mass deportation operation is something like you would see and say, like Amazon trying to get your Prime delivery within 24 hours,” Lyons said. “So trying to figure out how to do that with human beings.”
Lyons said the agency is struggling to carry out President Donald Trump’s orders to execute mass deportations of migrants for several reasons. In part, court backlogs and crowded detention centers are causing issues.
While thousands of migrants have been detained in recent weeks, approximately half of the pending cases involve asylum seekers who face a lengthy wait for a ruling, Bloomberg reports.

Lyons also said the agency needs to determine a way to transport people by air and ground in a more efficient manner, pointing to how companies like Amazon coordinate to deliver packages quickly.
Critics say the comments are “cruel” and “dehumanizing” to migrants and those seeking to immigrate to the U.S.
“Human beings aren’t products to be wrapped, packaged, and shipped to fulfill an order. Yet the acting leader of ICE believes that is the ‘dream’ way for ICE to fulfill Trump’s order of mass deportation,” said Vanessa Cardenas, executive director of America’s Voice, a non-profit organization that works to reform the immigration system.
“Human beings, regardless of immigration status, aren’t Amazon packages,” Cardenas continued.
