Health officials urge safe cannabis storage as child exposures rise

June 25, 2025

HILLSDALE, Mich. (WILX) – Marijuana edibles may look like candy, but health officials say that can be dangerous, especially when left within reach of children.

That’s why the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency is relaunching its Lock It Up campaign. The program provides free locking storage bags to help keep THC products secure and out of sight. Each bag features a zipper, locking clasp, and padlock to prevent accidental access, particularly by young children.

“A lot of our packing is very colorful, and it’s candy,” said Ashley Davis, owner of Stoned Goat Cannabis Company in Osseo. “It tastes good as well, so it appeals to children.”

In 2024, the Michigan Poison Control Center reported nearly 400 cases of children under five exposed to THC. Local health leaders say safe storage is one part of a broader solution.

“We use this campaign not only to promote safe storage, but also to provide general education around THC and marijuana use,” said Joshua Englehart with the health agency. “We share that information through social media and outreach in the community.”

The agency outlines three key steps for safe cannabis use in the home:

  • Discuss it with your household
  • Lock it up safely
  • Dispose of it properly when no longer needed

Davis says education starts at home. “Even if your cannabis is locked up, your child should know what it is because it can be toxic,” she said.

Free locking bags are available at health department offices and partner locations throughout Hillsdale, Branch, and St. Joseph counties, while supplies last.
