Toronto may have missed the worst of an ice storm this weekend that left nearly 400,000 Ontarians around the city without power, but Environment Canada is now warning of heavy rains expected to hit the city mid-week.

A total of 30 to 50 millimetres of rain is expected to fall on Toronto Wednesday, with Environment Canada warning of localized flooding in low-lying areas.

The weather agency issued a special weather statement Monday to warn of the upcoming rainfall. Additional rainfall warnings could come into effect closer to Wednesday, according to the statement.

Rain is expected to begin in southwestern Ontario Wednesday morning, before reaching the Golden Horseshoe some time in the afternoon.

More than 50 millimetres could fall in some areas, particularly over southwestern Ontario, the weather agency says. Thunderstorms are also expected.

The rain is expected to end west to east Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.
