Herbster changes position on medical marijuana on Veterans Day
November 11, 2025
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – On this Veterans Day, former candidate for Nebraska governor Charles Herbster is weighing in on medical marijuana, explaining that his conversations with many veterans over the years have changed his position on the issue.
On Facebook, Herbster wrote: “For veterans, cannabis is a far better option than the opioids most are prescribed for their ailments. Governor Jim Pillen has done everything he can to delay and dismantle the voter-enacted medical cannabis statutes. He has restricted medical cannabis regulations so much that it will be difficult for those in need to find relief.”
After seven of every 10 Nebraska voters approved medical cannabis one year ago, Governor Pillen told First Alert 6 that the will of the people is important, but there are times you have to stand back and consider what’s best for all people.
Three years ago, Herbster finished second to Pillen in a crowded field in the Republican primary for governor.
Rod Edwards, a spokesman for Charles Herbster, tells me tonight that Herbster “has heard from a lot of people encouraging him to run” for governor. “But a decision has not yet been made.”
The primary is in May.
