HHS probe finds Columbia U’s prolonged hostile environment for Jewish students
May 23, 2025
(TNND) — A Department Health and Human Services (HHS) Investigation has found that Columbia University violated federal civil rights laws by “acting with deliberate indifference toward student on student harassment of Jewish students”, from October 7, 2023, through the present.
Specifically the school is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects against discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin.
Columbia was one of the places where protests erupted from students protesting the Israel-Hamas War, leading to the Trump Administration to pull $400 million in grants from the University.
The HHS Civil Rights office released a statement Thursday saying, “The findings carefully document the hostile environment Jewish students at Columbia University have had to endure for over 19 months, disrupting their education, safety, and well-being,” said Anthony Archeval, Acting Director of the Office for Civil Rights at HHS. “We encourage Columbia University to work with us to come to an agreement that reflects meaningful changes that will truly protect Jewish students.”
Columbia University responded with a statement saying, “We understand this finding is part of our ongoing discussions with the government. Columbia is deeply committed to combating antisemitism and all forms of harassment and discrimination on our campus. We take these issues seriously and will work with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education to address them.”
In March, Columbia agreed to a list of demands from the White House in order to restore $400 million in federal funding to the school.
