JACKSON, Tenn. — High gas prices are driving consumer decisions from staying home more to budgeting.

Research shows consumers are looking for alternatives.

High gas prices are pushing more consumers to rethink what they’re driving. Dealerships say one of the first questions they’re hearing now isn’t about horsepower or features, it’s about fuel savings.

“You are seeing a greater increase with gas prices ad people have a curiosity of hybrids versus just the gasoline,” said Michael Chambliss, sale janitor for Golden Circle Auto Club.

A recent poll conducted by the University of Chicago Institute for Climate and Economic Growth shows while only 7 % of Americans own an electric vehicle, triple that number are considering purchasing one.

Current gas prices play a major role in the switch from gas to electric vehicle.

“We’re still seeing those elevated costs,” said Megan Cooper, AAA spokesperson.

Cooper says there may be no relief in sight as summer fuel mixes already cost consumers more on average but many people are still wary.

78 % say the cost of an electric vehicle is too high and charging time remains a top barrier but there is an alternative.

“The hybrids give a lot of people more versatility when they’re traveling where they don’t have to worry about charging and stuff, but yet they get the extra gas mileage around town that a hybrid offers,” said Chambliss.

Cooper encourages drivers to take advantage of fuel reward programs if you haven’t already.

“You know, if you’re planning a summer road trip, just assume that those high gas prices are going to stick around and our best advice for drivers is to start planning ahead now,” said Cooper.

The Tennessee gas price average is now $3.88 across the state and $3.90 here in the Hub City.
