Hinesburg voters choose not to allow retail cannabis sales following Town Meeting Day vote

Hinesburg voters did not give cannabis retailers the green light at their Town Meeting Day vote on Tuesday, with the vote to allow dispensaries to open in town failing by just six votes.Cannabis is still federally illegal, but in Vermont, there is a legal option for towns to opt-in to permit retail cannabis sales if voters agree to allow businesses in.That very question came before Hinesburg voters on Tuesday, but it failed by a slim margin, with 620 yes votes and 626 no votes.Currently, there is a statewide pause on retail cannabis licenses, with the Cannabis Control Board saying the market is too saturated in places like Burlington. The board is now looking to create incentives for sellers to move into less populous areas.
