How to make sure cannabis isn’t mistaken for Halloween candy

Dominic Bradshaw, sales manager at Luxury Lux Dispensary, said cannabis items like edibles can sometimes get mistaken for sweets.

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis marijuana dispensary manager is letting parents know what they need to be aware of this Halloween, including what types of candy their children are eating.

“Some of the labeling can be a little confusing,” said Dominic Bradshaw, sales manager at Luxury Lux Dispensary.

Bradshaw said cannabis items like edibles can sometimes get mistaken for sweets.

“Some of it (cannabis) can look very candy-like. What I want you to look out for is resealable packages. Candy wrappers don’t have resealable packages; cannabis does,” Bradshaw said.

Just last year, Missouri passed regulations on marijuana-related products. Among those rules include:

  • The packages can only be one color;
  • They can have up to two logos of different colors; and
  • The word “marijuana” must be prominently printed on the outside.

Even with the regulations, Bradshaw said, it’s still smart to be on the lookout.

Adults with marijuana at home should secure it so children don’t confuse it for Halloween candy.

“It’s very important for parents to please keep your goodies put away and locked so the kids don’t find them,” Bradshaw said.

Since marijuana is legal now in many states, including Missouri and Illinois, more children can be exposed to the drug. If you think a child may have consumed an edible containing THC, call the Poison Control Center Hotline immediately at 800-222-1222.
