Hydropower Is the Foundation of Seattle’s Energy Past, Present, and Future

March 7, 2025

Did you know that hydropower is the backbone of Seattle’s electricity? For more than a century, it has played a vital role in powering communities across the Pacific Northwest. Its importance continues to grow as we look to build a more sustainable and electrified future.

At Seattle City Light, we’re proud to have one of the most renewable power mixes in the country: 88% of the electricity we deliver comes from hydropower. This reliable energy source ensures that lights stay on and our city stays vibrant. It also provides a foundation for our clean energy future.

We became the first large utility to achieve 100% carbon neutrality in 2005. This means that we reduce or offset all carbon emissions from our operations to have no net impact on the environment. This is part of our commitment to staying at the forefront of sustainability. Hydropower is a key part of this commitment. It provides reliable, renewable electricity that powers homes, businesses, and schools throughout the region.

Here’s a quick breakdown of where your power comes from:

  • 45% comes from hydropower purchased through the Bonneville Power Administration.
  • Overall, more than 90% of the electricity we deliver is from renewable sources.

Hydropower’s role in a changing world

As we transition to electric vehicles, heat pumps, and other technologies that rely on electricity, having a dependable energy source like hydropower is more important than ever. What makes hydropower unique? It’s flexible and dependable, meaning it can adapt to the ups and downs of energy demand throughout the day. When paired with other renewable sources like solar and wind, which depend on weather conditions, hydropower helps integrate these new, variable resources. This ensures that our electric grid remains balanced and reliable — a benefit that’s going to become even more critical in the years to come.

What does the future look like?

Hydropower will continue playing a huge role in Seattle’s energy future. We plan to add 1,825 megawatts of new clean energy resources in the next decade while maintaining our dedication to preserving and optimizing our hydroelectric systems. This includes improving our dams for greater efficiency and finding innovative ways to adapt to climate challenges that may impact the water supply.

While it provides just 5.7% of energy generation nationwide, Washington state leads the nation in generating hydroelectricity – about 27% of the nation’s hydropower. Nationally, hydropower’s potential remains untapped.

Consider this: There are thousands of non-powered dams across the country. How could retrofitting even a small fraction of them for hydroelectricity help create a more sustainable energy landscape?

What does this mean for you?

For the Seattle area’s residents and businesses, hydropower means access to reliable, affordable electricity. Whether you’re plugging in your laptop or charging your electric vehicle, you can feel confident that your energy is coming from a dependable, sustainable source.
