Hyundai Mobis Develops 160-kW Electric Drive System – The Buzz

May 28, 2026

Hyundai Mobis developed a 160-kilowatt (kW) EV drive system for general-purpose electric vehicles following development of its 250-kW high-performance model. The company also plans to complete development of a 120-kW EV drive system for compact mobility vehicles during the first half of this year.

Hyundai Mobis said the expanded lineup will support all major electric vehicle segments while strengthening its competitiveness in electrification components.

EV Drive System Development

Hyundai Mobis previously focused on mass production of PE systems based on customer orders. The company now said it has secured in-house design technology for key PE system components through internal research and development.

The PE system functions as the electric equivalent of an internal combustion engine powertrain. The system includes a motor, inverter and reduction gear.

Modular Design and Standardization

Hyundai Mobis said it focused on standardizing major components and modularizing the EV drive system during development. Key standardized components include the drive motor stator, inverter and power module containing the power semiconductors.

The company said the standardized platform structure allows broader scalability across multiple vehicle models.

Hyundai Mobis said the approach improves efficiency compared with developing a new powertrain for each vehicle launch. The company also expects the modular strategy to support future mass production as EV model volumes increase.

Performance Improvements

The Hyundai Mobis EV drive system delivers a maximum output of 160 kW, equivalent to approximately 215 horsepower in internal combustion engine terms.

The company said the output level is suitable for most electric vehicles currently in production. Installing two systems on the front and rear axles doubles total output. Hyundai Mobis also improved system performance despite designing the system as a universal platform.

Specific power increased by approximately 16%, while overall system volume decreased by nearly 20%. The company achieved those improvements through modular design, standardized components and updated cooling technology.

Hyundai Mobis also developed a new power module using power semiconductors designed to improve energy efficiency.

Global Expansion Plans

Hyundai Mobis plans to market the EV drive system to global automotive customers. The company said some overseas customers have already expressed interest.

Hyundai Mobis previously secured battery system orders from global customers. The company now plans to expand further into electrified powertrain systems.

According to Hyundai Mobis, the expanded capabilities are also expected to improve profitability through combined design and mass-production operations.

Additional PE System Development

Hyundai Mobis completed development of a 250-kW high-performance PE system last year.

The company said it designed the system to compete in areas including maximum output, motor torque and cooling performance. Hyundai Mobis said it also plans to complete development of a 120-kW PE system for compact vehicles during the first half of this year.

The smaller system focuses on reduced size and weight while supporting price competitiveness for emerging markets.

The company said the combined lineup will support electric vehicles ranging from compact mobility products to high-performance models.
