Meta Platforms has a beta of 1.20, according to Yahoo Finance, meaning it is 20% more volatile than the overall stock market, on average. This means that plenty of holders have likely been shaken out of the stock during one of its precipitous declines. In 2022, for example, the stock plummeted over 64%, a scary enough drop to make even the most bullish investor question their position.
But those who held on — or bought more shares — were handsomely rewarded, with the stock nearly tripling in 2023, followed by additional gains of over 66% in 2024.
In early 2025, Meta Platforms surged to new all-time highs, only to get caught up in the Trump tariff selloff that pulled the entire market down into a correction. Historically, big drops in Meta have proven to be opportunities for big gains, although past performance cannot guarantee future results.
But to put things in perspective, here’s a look at how much you would have made if you invested $10,000 in Meta 1, 5 and 10 years ago. The return of the S&P 500 and Nasdaq market indexes are provided by way of comparison. But here’s a sneak preview: Meta Platforms has demolished the stock market averages over the past 1-, 5- and 10-year periods.
