Irena and Etihad Credit Insurance Partner to Boost Renewable Energy Financing

The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) has entered into a collaborative partnership agreement with Etihad Credit Insurance (ECI), the UAE’s federal export credit company, according to a report from TradeArabia News Service published on June 7, 2026.

ECI is providing a set of credit insurance and risk mitigation solutions designed to complement the Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF) platform. The company operates across 110 countries, with a particular emphasis on Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, South and Southeast Asia, and Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) partner countries.

Francesco La Camera, Director-General of Irena, commented that the agency works with its global membership and funding partners to improve access to financing for renewable energy projects. He noted that perceived risks in many developing markets continue to hinder investment. La Camera indicated that ECI’s involvement in the ETAF Platform creates new avenues to attract financing for projects through targeted risk mitigation measures, helping to bridge that gap and stimulate greater investment in the energy transition.

Raja Al Mazrouei, Chief Executive Officer of ECI, stated that the partnership represents a significant step forward in accelerating the global shift toward a sustainable, low-carbon future. He said that ECI considers addressing financing and risk-related challenges essential for scaling renewable energy investments, especially in emerging and high-growth markets. By offering comprehensive credit insurance and risk mitigation solutions to ETAF-supported projects, ECI aims to strengthen investor confidence, unlock larger capital flows, and improve the bankability of clean energy initiatives. Al Mazrouei added that the collaboration reflects ECI’s commitment to advancing climate action, supporting sustainable economic development, and enhancing international cooperation in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 ambitions.

The ETAF Platform, established in 2021, combines project facilitation, financing matchmaking, and access to risk-mitigation solutions to move viable projects from pipeline to financing. It also aligns with country energy transition priorities, climate commitments, and sustainable development goals.

The partnership between Irena and ECI will allow the two institutions to combine their project origination channels and network of partners on a single platform—the ETAF—maximizing the chances for renewable energy projects worldwide to reach financing and construction. With ECI joining, the ETAF partner count has increased to 15, with total pledges amounting to $4.15 billion, underscoring its role as one of the most inclusive financing and de-risking platforms for a renewable-based energy transition.
