Italy Ends Meta WhatsApp AI Probe as EU Investigation Expands

June 8, 2026

Italy’s competition authority has ended its investigation into Meta Platforms over allegations that the tech group abused its dominant market position by integrating its artificial intelligence tool into WhatsApp, according to Reuters.

The Italian regulator, known as AGCM, announced on Monday that it had closed the case, which was originally launched in July 2025. The investigation focused on concerns that Meta may have leveraged its market power by installing its AI assistant on the popular messaging platform WhatsApp, per Reuters.

According to Reuters, AGCM decided to drop the probe after the European Commission expanded its own investigation into the matter to cover Italy as part of a broader review across the European Union.

The move means the issue will continue to be examined at the EU level rather than through a separate Italian proceeding. According to Reuters, the European Commission’s wider investigation now includes the Italian territory, prompting AGCM to end its parallel inquiry.

Meta has faced increasing scrutiny from regulators in Europe over competition and digital market practices as authorities assess the impact of AI features being integrated into widely used online services. In this case, the Italian regulator said the European Commission’s expanded review made a national investigation unnecessary, according to Reuters.
