TYLER, Texas — Happy World Environment Day!
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5. It serves as a reminder to protect the environment and to beat plastic pollution.
According to the United Nations, 11 million tons of plastic end up in the water each year. A good portion of that is microplastic. Microplastic is a piece of plastic pollution that is less than 5 millimeters long. It can end up in the stomachs of aquatic creatures and harm marine life.
Today, the UN urges people to the 5 R’s: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink plastics.
