Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is finalizing a lengthy prenuptial agreement to safeguard his US$220 billion fortune ahead of his June wedding to fiancée Lauren Sánchez in Venice.
Bezos, 61, and Sánchez, 55, became engaged in 2023 aboard his $500 million superyacht off the coast of Cannes, France. Bezos would marry “tomorrow” if he could, but his lawyers insist on completing legal provisions first, a source told the Daily Mail.
“His lawyers won’t let him move ahead without it,” the source said. A spokesperson for Sánchez said there is “no story” regarding the prenup. The agreement is said to cover all assets, from real estate to motor vehicles and jewelry, in case of a separation. Bezos, the world’s third-richest person with a net worth of $220.3 billion as of May 30, according to Forbes, is making sure everything is in place ahead of his wedding.

Dain Dreyer, a partner at U.S. law firm Dreyer & Mazaheri, said a prenuptial agreement at this level of wealth is a substantial undertaking that can take several months to finalize. He noted that the process typically involves a large team of high-priced attorneys and financial advisors working continuously, not only in the U.S. but also in other countries where Bezos holds major assets.
“Technically, it’s not the dollar figure that makes it difficult… it’s the sheer complexity. Transparency and fairness are key… especially to ensure enforceability down the road,” he added.
While such an agreement is expected for individuals with significant wealth, it marks a departure from Bezos’s first marriage to MacKenzie Scott, which lacked a prenup. Bezos and Scott married in 1993, long before Amazon became a trillion-dollar empire. They were together for 25 years before divorcing in 2019.
Without a prenuptial agreement, their separation resulted in a complicated financial settlement, as reported by British magazine HELLO! Scott ultimately received a 4% stake in Amazon, which has contributed to her estimated net worth of $29 billion.
Bezos and Sánchez’s relationship made headlines in 2019, around the same time the Amazon founder announced his divorce from Scott. Sánchez, who had two children with her ex-husband, Hollywood talent agent Patrick Whitesell, also finalized her divorce before becoming engaged to Bezos.
The couple’s wedding is set for the weekend of June 24 in Venice, Italy. The ceremony will reportedly take place on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Bezos has booked five luxury hotels and every water taxi in the city.
The event, expected to cost US$10 million, will host an A-list guest list including celebrities, politicians, and business leaders. Attendees at Sánchez’s recent Paris bachelorette party included Kim Kardashian, Eva Longoria, and Katy Perry.
