Map shows if homes are solar suitable

PA Media The picture shows a person wearing a bright yellow high-visibility jacket working on the installation of solar panels on a sloped, red-tiled roof. Several large black photovoltaic panels are already mounted in neat rows, and the person appears to be securing one of the panels using tools. There is an open roof window near the top left of the image, and metal mounting rails are visible beneath the panels. In the background, scaffolding is set up along the roof edge, and the sky is partly cloudy with green hills visible in the distance.PA Media

Islanders can now find out if their rooftops may be suitable for solar panels thanks to a new interactive map launched by the Government of Jersey.

The map lets people check if their homes could work for solar energy, giving them a starting point before making any big decisions.

The map uses advanced 3D modelling to simulate the Sun’s movement throughout the year.

Areas with high exposure are more suitable for panels, while shaded spots may not be ideal. However, officials stress that the map is only a guide and does not replace professional assessments.

Some properties are excluded, including listed buildings that are unlikely to get planning permission and structures like polytunnels and glasshouses, which cannot support panels.
