President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will attend a prayer service and visit with grieving families during their visit to New Orleans in the wake of a New Year’s Day alleged terrorist attack on Bourbon Street.
The Bidens will be in New Orleans Monday evening and attend an Interfaith Prayer Service for Peace and Healing hosted by the Archdiocese of New Orleans at the Basilica of St. Louis King of France to mourn the loss of the 14 victims killed by Shamsud-Din Jabbar.
The service will be to the open public and will start at 6 p.m.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry plans to meet with Biden during the visit, when Landry said he will ask the president to issue a disaster declaration in response to last week’s attack. The declaration will free up additional federal resources to assist with security and support for survivors, including crisis counseling, Landry said.
“I look forward to speaking with President Biden today on quickly approving my request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration,” Landry said in a statement Monday.
President Biden spoke last week with the families of the victims killed in the attack, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, and has been in contact with state and local officials, including New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry.
Following the attack, Biden praised the city, insisting that “the spirit of New Orleans will never, never, never be defeated.”
The Bidens’ visit coincides with Twelfth Night, the first day of the Carnival season in New Orleans that leads up to Mardi Gras day. Several events are scheduled, including a walking parade in the French Quarter, as officials have pledged to review security plans for the city’s busiest time period.
