JPMorgan Maintains Cautious Tesla Stance Ahead of Q1 Earnings

An analysis from JPMorgan reiterated a cautious view on Tesla shares. The firm’s price target implies a significant potential decline from the current trading level.

The analyst’s earnings per share estimate for 2026 was revised downward, now sitting below the broader consensus. The note advised a high degree of caution for investors, citing risks associated with expansion into higher-volume, lower-price segments related to demand, execution, and competition.

Tesla‘s first-quarter vehicle deliveries fell below a consensus forecast. The company reported producing more vehicles than it delivered during the period, indicating an inventory buildup.

JPMorgan’s price target is substantially lower than the overall analyst consensus. Among the analysts covering the stock, a minority hold a negative rating.

The analysis acknowledged Tesla’s strengths, including its business model, product portfolio, and technology. However, it concluded these are outweighed by above-average execution risk, rising competition, brand controversy, and valuation concerns.

Within a prominent group of large technology stocks, Tesla shares have experienced the most pronounced decline since the start of the year.

The delivery shortfall extends a challenging period for the automaker. Previous quarterly results showed a sharp year-over-year decline in net income and automotive revenue, alongside the first annual revenue decline. Energy storage revenue increased in that prior quarter.

Current challenges include the expiration of a federal electric vehicle purchase incentive, increased competition from Chinese manufacturers, and public scrutiny. Company leadership has highlighted future technologies as areas for growth.

Investors will get a fuller picture of Tesla’s Q1 2026 performance on the evening of April 22, when the company releases its quarterly earnings.
