April 18, 2025
Kaiser Permanente (Oakland, Calif.) unveiled a hospital-based renewable energy microgrid system at Kaiser Permanente Ontario Medical Center in Oakland, according to a news release.
The system provides clean, reliable electrical power for the hospital and adds 2 megawatts of on-site solar generation and 9 megawatt-hours of non-lithium battery storage to the state’s electrical grid. The microgrid can also serve all of the hospital’s emergency backup power needs for 10 continuous hours.
Kaiser Permanente anticipates the microgrid’s on-site solar power will avoid about 650 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions by producing roughly 3,300 megawatt-hours per year of zero-emission electricity. That is enough renewable electricity to power 275 homes year-round.
The hospital system achieved carbon neutral status in 2020 and has pledged to seek net-zero emissions status by 2050.
