Kentucky medical cannabis dispensary makes first sales!

January 15, 2026

On December 13, the Post Dispensary in Beaver Dam launched a soft opening as the Bluegrass State’s first medical cannabis dispensary. They were the first dispensary in Kentucky to have legal sales, but they ran out of cannabis and have not yet reopened. More medical cannabis companies are coming online, including a processor. There has yet to be an announced launch date for sales at additional dispensaries, but many, including Gov. Andy Beshear (D), are hoping by the end of January.

A list of dispensaries that are approved to open is available here. As of December 4, 2025, 47 dispensaries have been approved to open. However, most are still awaiting an adequate supply to serve patients. In 2023, Gov. Beshear signed SB 47 into law, legalizing medical cannabis in the Bluegrass State. An overview of the program can be found here.

There are currently over 23,000 registered medical cannabis patients in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and they will have access to their medicine starting in 2026. The process of becoming a patient is very straightforward. The launch of this program has been handled efficiently by the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis.

It is yet to be decided when Gov. Beshear’s Executive Order, which provides some legal protections for medical patients, will be rescinded. When issued, it was stated that the order would be rescinded when patients had access to dispensaries across the state.
