Kites, sunshine and solar power light up Chicago Ridge’s fifth annual Solarbration

April 27, 2025

A sea of kites soared above Freedom Park on Saturday, April 26, as families gathered for the Chicago Ridge Park District’s fifth annual Solarbration — a colorful kickoff to summer and a celebration of clean, renewable energy.

Set against the backdrop of Freedom Park at 6200–6228 Birmingham St., the event offered sunshine, music and hands-on activities for all ages. Children zipped through kite strings and solar stations, while parents relaxed to the sound of live music and laughter.

“This event is all about celebrating how far we’ve come with solar energy in the district,” said Jen Grabowski, recreation supervisor for the park district. “Four of our buildings now produce solar power — that’s something worth sharing with the community.”

The Solarbration, now in its fifth year, has become a seasonal tradition for Chicago Ridge residents.

“This is so much fun and it’s something different for my grandkids to enjoy,” Jennifer Fields, of Chicago Ridge, said.

Last year, organizers introduced professional kite-flying demonstrations through a partnership with Chicago Kite. The crowd favorite returned this weekend, offering both aerial thrills and kites for sale — starting at $20 through Chicago Kite or $5 from the park district.

“Kites are a perfect symbol for this event,” Grabowski said. “They use wind, we use sun — both are forces of nature, and both show how fun and powerful renewable energy can be.”

Throughout the day, kids explored solar-themed stations, made sun prints, tackled an energy scavenger hunt, and let their creativity fly with nature-inspired art projects. Music pumped from solar-powered speakers as families filled the open lawn with picnic blankets and high-flying kites.

“This is really about more than just solar panels,” Grabowski said. “It’s a chance to get the community together and celebrate what park districts can do — provide beautiful spaces, educational opportunities, and a place to just enjoy life outdoors.”

Information booths helped explain how solar energy works and what it’s saving the park district in operating costs. Staff answered questions about solar adoption at home and highlighted the district’s growing commitment to sustainability.

“Seeing all those kites flying over the park — it’s just beautiful,” Grabowski said. “It reminds you why these events matter. They bring people together and show what’s possible when a community embraces sustainability.”
