La Crescent panel OKs Carbon Cannabis growing business

LA CRESCENT, Minn. — The La Crescent Planning Commission gave the green light for plans for a new cannabis growing business from regional industry leader Carbon Cannabis on Tuesday evening.
Placed in the business park on the eastern side of the city, the growing business is down the road from a cannabis retailer that is almost complete. The building is mostly complete already, but Carbon Cannabis needs a permit to remodel and change the use of the rented building.
La Crescent’s city council is expected to make a final decision on the new business on Monday, Oct. 13.
The business will not sell retail products to the public. Carbon Cannabis will cultivate, extract and manufacture cannabis and cannabis products for distribution to other businesses.
Carbon Cannabis CEO Austin Wszolek added that Carbon will supply to local retailers like the three already approved in La Crescent.
“Between the three dispensaries, I think that’s going to be plenty of work for us,” Wszolek said.
Per Minnesota state law, deliveries have to be contracted with an Office of Cannabis Management-licensed third party. Carbon Cannabis cannot make its own deliveries.
Wszolek added that once the business is in “full swing,” the cultivation office could employ up to 10 people.
Officials with Carbon Cannabis reported that the building will have professional odor mitigation with carbon filtration and closed-loop extraction equipment.
The application also noted the site will have extra noise suppression and 24-hour security required by state law. La Crescent’s engineering and police departments will verify that these enhancements are added.
Carbon Cannabis currently has a similar office in La Crosse inside the former La Crosse Rubber Mill building. The difference, Carbon staff said, is the La Crescent business will be able to manufacture full-THC marijuana products where La Crosse can only manufacture hemp-derived cannabis.
