Leadership gap stalls New York cannabis progress

April 1, 2025

Four years after New York legalized recreational marijuana, the state’s cannabis agency is still without a permanent leader, according to Spectrum News. Despite a booming market and over $1.2 billion in sales, the top job at the Office of Cannabis Management remains vacant following last year’s resignation of Chris Alexander.

Felicia A. B. Reid, who’s served as acting director for nine months, has applied for the role but says she’s in the dark about the decision process. While Governor Kathy Hochul praises Reid’s impact, a confirmation hearing before the June legislative deadline remains uncertain.

The agency is also seeking a new chief equity officer and plans to hire more staff to tackle application backlogs. Meanwhile, officials continue to resist Hochul’s proposal to reintroduce cannabis odor as grounds for roadside drug tests.
