March 29, 2025

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Legislation by Sen. Matt Boehnke (R-Kennewick) aiming to expand renewable energy while balancing environmental and land-use policies cleared a key House committee.

Senate Bill 5445, which promotes distributed-energy projects and supports “agrivoltaics,” is nearing a final vote in the House of Representatives.

The bill received unanimous approval from the House Environment and Energy Committee and is now awaiting placement on the voting calendar. Boehnke emphasized the bill’s benefits, saying, “This bill makes it easier to develop renewable energy while protecting farmland and supporting rural communities.”

SB 5445 aims to enhance the state’s energy independence, reduce carbon emissions, and create economic opportunities in rural areas. Boehnke added, “By streamlining regulations for renewable-energy projects, we’re paving the way for a stronger, more resilient energy grid.”

The bill is expected to reach the House floor for a vote before the April 16 deadline for Senate-passed bills.
