Letter: Enjoy it all you like, but keep your cannabis to yourself
June 9, 2025
To the editor — As summer approaches and the air fills with the stench of cannabis, take a moment and ask yourself: Is this wafting over my fence? Is it drifting from my deck into a neighbor’s open window? Do I even care? You should.
Maybe the house down the block is old. Maybe the windows don’t seal, or the sunlight streams through the crack in the door frame. When you light up, and the stench of those toxic carcinogens slithers across your lawn onto theirs, wrapping around their front stoop, you’re not only making a decision for yourself, you’ve just made one for them, too.
Listen. This isn’t moral superiority shouting you down. It’s a request for basic respect. Cannabis is legal in this state, yes. But legal doesn’t mean fair. Your right to light up is stomping on everyone’s right to breathe clean air. That’s not liberty or justice. It’s a property nuisance. It’s a health hazard.
I may be in the minority, but I’m not alone. We don’t have to accept it. We can challenge the status quo. We can push for legislation that works for everyone.
True freedom doesn’t come at the cost of another’s.
