Letter to the Editor: Renewable energy benefits Kentucky

Subsidies reveal what a country values and what it wants to promote. The federal government subsidizes both fossil fuels and renewable energy. However, many of the tax credits and incentives that helped level the playing field between fossil fuels and renewable energy affordability would be withdrawn in the recent reconciliation bill passed by the House of Representatives. Energy needs keep growing. Without an increase in renewables, energy costs will rise. Keeping the renewable tax credits in place could save consumers 2-4% on their electric bills in 2030 and 2-5% in 2035. Removing the tax credits will cost consumers an additional 10% or about $142 annually by 2040. In addition, right here in Kentucky, the federal government is investing in clean energy. According to the research performed by the government affairs team at Citizens’ Climate Lobby, Thomas Massie’s district (KY04) will receive $978,000,000 in investments in solar and battery storage creating 2,027 jobs and improving the health of the environment for us and our families. This investment in Kentucky renewables is a part of the inflation reduction act (IRA) and is being withdrawn by the new House reconciliation bill. Join me in calling our senators, Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, to request support for continuing the tax credits and investments in clean energy here in Kentucky. Making renewables affordable gives Kentuckians more choices, supports good paying jobs, and strengthens the economic well-being of the Commonwealth.
