Local law enforcement aids in Costa Mesa Warehouse search, illegal cannabis and psilocybin

April 11, 2025

On Tuesday, April 1, the Special Enforcement Team (SET), with support from the Laguna Beach Police Detective Bureau, agents from the California Department of Cannabis Control, and an investigator from the California Tax and Fee Assessment, seized over 450 pounds of cannabis products and over 50 pounds of psilocybin mushroom products from a warehouse in Costa Mesa, according to a police report.

This search follows a previous warrant executed at Cinder Box Smoke Shop in Laguna Beach in late January, a carryover of SET’s investigation. The Jan. 27 search discovered approximately 3.8 pounds of cannabis products and about half of a pound of psilocybin mushroom products being illegally sold at the 640 South Coast Highway premises after a tip from a member of the public.

Law enforcement officers detained and identified several suspects connected to the illegal sales of controlled substances, the report said. A total of approximately 451 pounds of cannabis products were recovered, which included loose marijuana buds, THC concentrates and edibles. Additionally, approximately 54 pounds of psilocybin mushroom products were seized, including chocolate bars, micro-dose candies and full mushrooms.

The investigation remains ongoing, and charges related to the unlawful sale of controlled substances are pending.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity or illegal drug sales to the Laguna Beach Police Department.
