MORRISTOWN, NJ — It’s been a long time coming, but Morristown has officially welcomed its first legal cannabis dispensary.

Nearly three years after receiving a license from the Morristown Council, Uma Flowers—a dispensary based in Pepperell, Massachusetts and founded by sisters-in-law Priyanka and Tejal Patel—has opened its doors on Ridgedale Avenue.

The lengthy process, which was delayed by a legal dispute between the retailer and the town, came to an official end this week as Uma Flowers held a soft opening at its new location: 100 Ridgedale Avenue.

The dispensary replaces a former Budget truck rental site on a busy stretch near the Morris Township border, across from a former state motor vehicle inspection station, a bank, and a lumberyard.

However, progress stalled last summer when the Town Council denied Uma Flowers a one-year retail cannabis license renewal, even as the company was in the process of building its dispensary on Ridgedale Avenue.

Council members discussed the issue in executive session but did not address it during the public portion of the meeting. Township documents later revealed that both the Council and the Cannabis Advisory Board (CAB) cited “sufficient evidence that they can no longer continue to support Uma Flowers NJ, LLC and their application.”

As a result, the company’s retail license was revoked, effective immediately.

The cannabis company immediately appealed the decision, claiming they were “shut out and sandbagged” during the renewal process.

During the public comment period of the June 11 meeting, representatives from Uma Flowers had urged council members not to deny the one-year cannabis retail license renewal.

Ultimately, in February of this year, the Town Cannabis Advisory Board recommended re-awarding a single license to Uma Flowers NJ, LLC, a recommendation that was subsequently adopted by the Town Council.

With the shop now open, its official hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Uma Flowers offers a wide selection of cannabis products, including edibles, pre-rolls, topicals, CBD items, vapes, and more.
