Lorain student recovering after medical emergency from consuming cannabis
May 14, 2025
A Lorain High School student suffered a medical episode May 13 after ingesting cannabis on the campus causing the building to temporarily go on lockdown, authorities said.
The incident caused an uproar with the community on social media as people shared their speculations and rumors began to circulate.
At 11:30 a.m., Lorain police were called to assist with the level two lockdown, according to a police report.
Working in conjunction with the Lorain Police School Resource officers, the officer learned that the lockdown was initiated due to a medical emergency involving a 10th grade boy who had become unresponsive after reportedly smoking a vape.
The teen was transported to Mercy Health — Lorain Hospital for medical treatment.
The boy and his friend, who spoke with the officers, said they went into a third-floor restroom to “smoke a vape,” the report stated.
As the student walked toward a nearby stairwell, he appeared to lose his balance and became dizzy.
He then sat down in the stairwell, eventually lying down and became unresponsive.
Other students and staff members noticed on him on the floor and contacted school security and LifeCare Ambulance.
No vapes were found on him, the report stated.
The vape was not found anywhere by officers.
The investigation was turned over to the school resource officer and Lorain City Schools for further follow-up.
Late May 14, the district issued a letter from the boy’s parents as well as school officials.
“First, we want to acknowledge something we all feel as parents and caregivers: when our children are involved with a situation with limited information, it’s deeply frustrating and concerning,” the letter stated. “When your children are in our care and an incident occurs, we fully understand the flood of worry that comes from not having all the details.
“Please know that we take this responsibility.”
After getting the boy’s family’s permission, the district was “grateful” to share news that he is making a recovery after regaining consciousness the morning of May 14.
“This news brings tremendous relief to all of us,” the letter stated.
The student’s mother asked the district to address the rumors circulating on social media.
“She wants our community to know that contrary to claims that her child ingested fentanyl, this is not true,” the letter stated. “The student consumed a gummy containing synthetic THC (a synthetic cannabinoid chemical).”
The district urges parents to have “open, honest conversations” with their children about the serious health risks involved with consuming dangerous substances.
“Thank you for your understanding and for being part of our school community. It’s during challenging moments like these that we are reminded of the strength and compassion that define Lorain City Schools,” the letter concluded.
