SHELBY, N.C. (WBTV) – A leading paint brand will invest $380 million in a new Cleveland County manufacturing center, state officials announced Thursday.

The brand, PPG, will be coming back to Shelby, about 70 years after it began its first stint in the city.

With the investment comes the creation of 110 jobs, with an average salary of almost $67,000.

“Bringing PPG back to Cleveland County and Shelby took a lot of effort by many people and organizations working behind the scenes,” stateSen. Ted Alexander said. “Our community looks forward to supporting the company as they re-establish operations in our area.”

The state did not say exactly what will be made at the new PPG facility, but in a statement, the company’s chairman and CEO said the investment in part demonstrates the “continued commitment to serving our aerospace customers.”

In addition to paint, PPG also produces coatings and specialty materials, and in the aerospace realm, makes advanced coatings, sealants, transparencies, packaging, chemical services, engineered materials and specialty products.

“It’s great to see another top manufacturing company select North Carolina as a place to do business,” state Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley said. “It’s also gratifying to see a company like PPG, with its historical ties to the region, once again become part of the strong and vibrant community of Shelby. I look forward to the great things to come from this renewed partnership.”

The state did not say in its announcement when the new PPG facility is expected to open.
