SPOKANE, Wash. — A man was shot and killed near West Plains just west of Spokane on Monday afternoon. 

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a reported shooting around 2:10 p.m. near West Geiger Boulevard and South Hayford Road. 

The caller reported seeing a man shoot another man and said several people were fleeing the area. 

Deputies responded to the scene and found a man who had been shot on the side of the road. SCSO says the man died on the scene. 

SCSO says a perimeter was established, and one man running through a field in the area was detained. 

SCSO says the scene is still active and asks people to avoid the area. Hayford Road north of Geiger Boulevard is closed.
