Utica, N.Y. — A Utica man who stabbed two people and threatened others with a knife this weekend was arrested Monday, police said.

On Sunday, Utica police were called to the 600 block of Bleecker Street for a report that someone had been stabbed, said Sgt. Michael Curley, a spokesperson for the Utica Police.

When officers arrived, they found two people suffering from stab wounds.

Around 4:55 p.m., Daniel Namutereza, 22 of Utica, had attempted to make a large purchase at a convenience store on Bleecker Street when his credit card was declined, Curley said.

Curley said Namutereza tried to make a smaller purchase and began to argue with the clerk over the transactions. Namutereza brandished a knife and stabbed the clerk in the face, he said.

The clerk suffered a large cut to the face, Curley said.

Namutereza left the store and approached a pedestrian on the sidewalk, Curley said. Namutereza stabbed the pedestrian unprovoked in chest before running away, he sad.

Curley said none of the injuries were life-threatening, but one person suffered a severe laceration to the face and the other a puncture wound to the chest.

As investigators interviewed the victims at the hospital, police received a call about a man who was threatening patrons with a knife in the North Utica plaza, Curley said.

Namutereza fled the scene before police could arrive, he said.

On Monday, police received information about the Namutereza’s identity, and members of the NY and NJ Marshall’s Regional Task Force conducted surveillance of his residence. As he was leaving his home, Namutereza was taken into custody and brought to the Utica Police Department, he said.

Namutereza was charged with attempted first-degree assault, second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
