Man takes Tesla Model 3 on unplanned 300-mile road trip then ends up 'shocked' by the cost compared to what it would have cost in a gas car

A YouTuber called Ben decided to head off on an unplanned road trip in his Tesla Model 3 EV, but he wasn’t prepared for the cost versus what he’d have paid in a gas-powered car.

The debate around the cost of a gas car versus an EV has been going on for a while, but it’s only when it’s put into practice that you realize what the differences are.

That is why YouTuber Ben Goes Electric decided to give it a go and see how his Tesla fared on the trip.

The car used in the test was a 2023 Tesla Model 3, long-range all-wheel drive model.

When fully charged, it has enough battery capacity for a range of 433 miles.

However, Ben set off with 73 percent battery, not 100 percent.

But of course, if needed, he would recharge along the way.

In addition, the Tesla was also not preconditioned, and the weather was cold in the UK, making for some interesting caveats to the test.

A single stop was made to recharge the car after 128 miles had been driven.

This 13-minute stop added 110 miles of range.

After fully recharging on the way back, the Model 3 arrived home with seven percent battery remaining.

But how much did it set him back financially?

So, the big question was: how much did that all cost?

Well, to supercharge the Tesla in total cost £10.78, and home charging before heading home was £3.27.

That comes to just £14.05, which is also only $18.86 at the time of writing.

Ben calculated the cost of this same trip driving a petrol- and diesel-powered car.

A petrol-powered car would have cost £41 for the same trip, or the equivalent of $55.

Diesel, meanwhile, would have cost £38, which is roughly $51.08 at the time of writing.

So that represents a good saving; in fact, it could be at least $36 across the trip.

That would be enough for a meal, or to go towards a hotel stay, and Ben was pretty surprised at just how cost-effective the EV was in comparison.

So, in the real world, an EV can definitely save you money over a gasoline-powered car.
